The scene begins with Elijah’s arrival at Horeb. The Hebrew reads, literally, “He came there, to the cave, and spent the night there.” The repeated “there,” first referring to Horeb and then to “the cave,” alerts us to the importance physical location will have throughout this scene. Furthermore, the definite article in “the cave” (which the NRSV omits) implies that this cave at Horeb is well-known to the reader. The word conveys a double allusion.
